Green Roofs

The various uses and beneficial properties of green roofs becoming increasingly important worldwide. This goes for environmental and building physics as well as in economic terms. Water retention, heat protection, improved performance of photovoltaic systems, protection from harmful emissions and noise, protection of the roof covering from aging and damage and green roofs are also creating new habitats for animals and plants and all in all are the characteristics that are convincing these days.

Many cities and communities promote and support green roofs in different ways. The measures range from attractive financial subsidies on the recognition as ecological compensation measure, up to the establishment of green roofs in development plans.

The inner cities are constantly being characterised by a too high degree of surface sealing so that heat of transport, industry and households contribute to the fact that inner cities are developing into so-called heat islands ("urban heat island effect"). The lack of night-time cooling effects burden increasingly on the health of the urban population. Green roofs can reduce through absorption and evaporation of water the excess surplus and thereby improving the city climate remarkably. Alone the vegetation surface and greenery on living roofs can effectively improve the air quality and filter pollutant particles from the air.

In addition, the energy balance of the building can be effectively enhanced by a green roof. Today there are various green roof systems that have a compensable thermal resistance and thus can be incorporated into the building physics calculation for compliance with the Energy Saving Ordinance.

Especially in the field of refurbishment of old roofs the single-layer RESITRIX® SK W Full Bond membrane has a significant static advantage with just about 2.75 kg/m² compared to the bitumen industry, with a weight of approxamitely 8 – 10 kg/ m². This lower basis weight of RESITRIX® SK W Full Bond guarantees in turn more options in choosing the individual green roof and planting. In addition, the fire load decreases.

Green roof types and structures

The most common green roof systems can be classified and distinguished as follows:
  • Extensive green roof vegetation
  • Simple Intensive green roof vegetation
  • Intensive green roof vegetation

Extensive green roofs

Extensive roof vegetation comprises greening with moss, sedum vegetation, grass, herbs, weed and small perennial vegetation. In the extensive green roof, the thin substrate layers are planted especially with robust and regenerative plants.

In the extensive planting what can classify the greenery as a sort of "environmental protective cover" where the maintenance cost is low and watering is to be made only in the growth phase.

Simple intensive Green roofs

The simple intensive green roof vegetation is a “measure of design greening” which requires an average medium maintenance with periodic watering.

Grass, herbs and small tree crops

Installation height (depth of green roof construction): 12 - 25 cm
Weight: 150 - 200 kg/m2

Intensive Green Roof Vegetation

The intensive roof vegetation applies to creation of a green zone with lawns, perennials, flower beds and small bushes or punctual greening with trees.

The intensive roof vegetation is already a "well-kept garden" or even a "park-like garden". The maintenance required is very high and a regular watering must be ensured.

Lawns, flower beds, small bushes, trees

Weight: 150 - 500 kg/m2
